BOTOX® has become a household name. However, for many years, in Europe, Dysport® has been used to combat frown lines, forehead lines, and crows feet. Although Dysport® was approved by the FDA for use in the United States in 2009, many people are still unfamiliar with the treatment. At Dermatology Consultants of South Florida, we like to keep our patients up to date on all the latest treatments available. Doing so allows you to make the best decisions for your aesthetic improvements. If you have been considering Dysport®, or you are a Dysport® user who is considering BOTOX®, we can help you make the best choice for you.
The Similarities
While you may not be familiar with Dysport®, you are likely familiar with the company that markets it, Medicis, because they make Restylane®. Another common name for Dysport® is its original name Reloxin. Since Dysport® and BOTOX® treat the same aesthetic concerns, people naturally want to understand what the differences are.
When it comes to BOTOX® vs. Dysport®, the two treatments are very similar. They both use the same main ingredient to help relax overactive muscles of the face and relieve the stress that contributes to signs of aging such as frown lines. However, the molecules in Dysport® are smaller than the ones in BOTOX® and are measured differently per unit.
Both have historical longevity in their cosmetic application. Their safety profiles are both extremely high. Also, both are suited for use on the same areas of the face and body. Each requires touch-up injections about every three to six months or so.
The Differences
To say there are major functional differences, or any at all, between the two is debatable. However, we will touch on what the general arguments for them are. There are studies being conducted to ascertain whether Dysport® has the same duration of efficacy as BOTOX®. Some argue it may not. Also, the former’s onset is more rapid than the latter. It is only a difference of days.
