Here at Dermatology Consultants of South Florida, we are happy to offer our patients a non-surgical, minimally-invasive procedure for fat removal in the chin area. Kybella® is a newer medical treatment proven to dissolve the submental fat pockets that cause a double chin. The treatment is administered via injection. It has been shown to produce satisfactory results in over eighty percent of patients who wanted double chin removal.
The History of Kybella®
Kybella® uses deoxycholic acid to dissolve fat cells. Its history goes back as far as the 1850’s, where a related compound, phosphatidylcholine, was used in France. Further research in the early 2000’s led to the discovery that deoxycholic acid was the compound responsible for dissolving fat cells.
Deoxycholic acid is a substance already found in the body. It aids digestion by breaking down the fats in your digestive tract. The active ingredient in Kybella® is a synthetic synthesis of deoxycholic acid.
When the treatment is directly injected into fat cells, the deoxycholic acid acts similarly to its natural counterpart. It destroys the fat cell membranes. Once the cells are destroyed, your body’s natural removal systems, the lymphatic and circulatory systems, dispose of the cells and deoxycholic acid debris as waste.
What is the Treatment Like?
Although Kybella® is impressive in the way it removes fat, it is not a miracle. That said, it is still rather fast, with an average of only two to four treatments needed before you see the results you want. The exact number of injections you need is determined by the amount of submental fat you want to be dissolved.
Permanent Double Chin Removal
Since the offending fat cells are completely destroyed, they can never return. Also, after your course of therapy, there are no maintenance treatments needed. That said, we do caution against excessive weight gain, as it can cause new fat cells to develop and reduce your long-term aesthetic results.
