What are Poison Ivy and Oak Rash?
Poison ivy and oak can grow as vines or shrubs almost anywhere in the United States. These plants can be found on riverbanks, in city parks, along the roadside, and in open fields and are both part of the Rhus plant family. While the leaves and stems of these plants are safe for human interaction, it is the oily sap known as urushiol that triggers an allergic reaction.
When the skin comes into contact with this sap, it can cause multiple uncomfortable symptoms, such as:
- Redness and itching of the skin
- A streaky or patchy rash that branches out from where the plant came into contact with the skin
- The development of red bumps or blisters that can ooze fluid
In addition to direct exposure to the plant, an allergic reaction to the sap can also occur from pet fur, gardening tools, outdoor equipment, or clothing that has the sap on it.
What Can I Expect from a Poison Ivy and Oak Rash?
This skin irritation is not contagious and the fluid from the blisters will not spread the rash. Although some poison oak and ivy rashes form immediately after exposure, others may take several days. Once the rash has formed, mild cases may last from five to 12 days whereas more severe rashes can take up to 30 days or longer.
